So, I like to game with only the right side of my headphones actually over ear, so that I can still hear what's going on in the house with my left ear. Wierd? Maybe.

Problem with that is that it makes certain sounds in the game impossible to hear unless I point the camera in a specific way, which is inconvenient for actually driving.

As an example I just tried driving from Eastbourne to Brighton with the 171. Could not hear AWS like this and had to try to predict it using the magnets on the floor, (which to be fair I kind of do anyway), until I missed one outside Lewes. (Incidentally I couldn't even finish the run because I got SPAD-ed coming into Brighton despite the two white dots showing...)

Then tried to drive the 323 on MAC. This time it wasn't AWS, but DSD.

(I've also had issues with the 802 AWS in the past, but I'm honestly convinced it just gives silent AWS because I've also had unheard AWS even when not using headphones but TV speaker audio instead.)

I've been told there's an option in the game settings to change this, but there doesn't seem to be one that I can see...

NVM I think I solved my own problem by going into the consoles accessibility settings and clicking force mono in the sound options
