The last thing we wanted, more of them! See the referbed 318s has the reverse issue, the middle window is too wide, but it still looks fine by comparison, cause the windows have the black border. Borrows from why a 150/1 looks good.
Whilst I wouldn’t call any train “ugly” (just too strong of a word, I’m not that harsh) I think I would have to add this one to this thread for consideration. that front was just butchered
Ya see. I like the side of it and the doors and what not. Sleek and modern looking. But when you look at the front. *shivers in fear* eew.
TBH the similar 334s are not exactly pretty - these tried to add a Japanese/Dutch style retracting gangway and it never worked properly. (TBF neither did the trains, which is why SWT tested the water with these before their main order went to Siemens
Don't dis the 334! Personally I think they look really good. Specially in ScotRails Pride livery. The interior could do with a revamp tho
What? No wayyy. That's probably one of the best looking Desiros imho. I mean I get it, it's like the 460, marmite, but I can't help but love this one too. lol I'd change the front to look more like this however.
You don’t need that much aerodynamic to reach 160 kph If it wasn’t that streamlined it would’ve looked alright in my opinion.
Perhaps before the 2nd of June 2023 I would have agreed but that now looks like a gorgeous flower compared to many in this thread!
I think flat fronts personally are always bad looking, too simplistic and doesn’t have any characteristics what could be uniquely likeable in my view. Best a flat shape can be is a simplistic box. the more pointy spaceship looking class 460 I think is quite unique and nice though, but maybe outdated nowadays.
You have a point, the 458/0 is a pig in lipstick, a lot of modern units are like that, too much flamboyance for what it is. It all depends how it's handled really, it's one of those things were you'll know when you see it. But if it leans into the fact it's boxy, not much if any flair, good visual balance, not too complex like how old mk1 units used to do it... Then it'll win me over. I'd say it's probably a lot more tempting to streamline everything in this modern age, but some units look good in the face of that. The 360 is one of them, not too ott like a 730, 197, 385 etc.
Lol. Think you mean class 380. The Class 385: Class 385 by TSW Nathan posted Aug 7, 2022 at 5:16 PM Is not streamlined in the slightest.
*chants* "ONE OF US!" "ONE OF US!" "ONE OF US!" "ONE OF US!" "ONE OF US!" "ONE OF US!" I do love the 385. It looks really nice on the outside. The traction motors sound brilliant! If only the interior was just as good and didn't have.... those seats. Sadly this loco was never replicated properly for TSW
This thing looks awful! It's like they took a class 313 and ripped it open pulled out some wires added some weird looking bits around the cab and then put in in service. This thing makes me shiver when people say they like it.
...unfortunately, dinosaurs are extinct. As an animal living today, a rhinoceros is more likely to be considered. I must admit that the middle door transition on a control car takes some getting used to, but it certainly had more practical reasons to enable consistent coupling of several units.
The South Western Batches look better, but the 455 was never pretty - then Southern rebuilt the cabs on their units like that.... Reason for the increase in pointier fronts is impact protection for the driver in event of hitting an obstruction, the 380 was the first gangwayed unit to try and meet the new rules. Later designs were able to do it with a flat front, though in the case of the 385 the reinforced front is at the expense of driver visibility.
Yes it is, the gangway is upright but the face fairings are pulled back and rounded off. Give me the cyberpunk 380, with better visibility, over the 385 any day. The latter is marmite, at certain angles it can look good but mostly nahhh. Just looks off with those weirdly shaped windows.
Love that the 380 is my local train Completely agree and understand. There's certain areas of the 385 that look a bit iffy but for the most part I like it. It's not for everyone though.
Ok, Class 455 from Southern I actually like (and miss), sorry for making you shiver TSW Nathan. I do like the Class 385 though, and the 380 is not bad, it grows on me. and I can't lie, the more I look at that Desiro, the more it grows on me as well. What is it called?
From a pure practical drivers perspective the 385 ranks very low down, I would take Electrostars over the 385s purely because of the shocking restricted view. Obviously in the grand scheme of things I'd chose neither and stick to my intercity trains with big windscreens that can go much faster and so are better!
Nice! Wish I had a Desiro for a local, got a 777 instead. I think the livery is a big draw with the 385 & 380s, that shade of blue with the yellow face all shiny and new. It's a tasty combo and compensates for the shortfalls imo. Going back to the 196 for spell, that one falls into similar box as the 385, it's a weird design and relies on the livery to do it any favours. I made a few simple adjustments that suit it better imo. The West Midlands don't need a yellow front due to the orange suiting it so well, being suitably vibrant, but it looks less impressive with the all black door so we gotta make it look wider, bring some convention back to this sea slug face. Dialled back the 'fangs' too. Same also applies to the 197, the Transport for Wales livery looks good in a weird way, red door etc. but it could be better... (A) (B) Take these options, it benefits from the same 196 concept, making use of the door, and connecting the window trim with the black. I don't get why they didn't use yellow if every other TfW livery has it, looks a bit dystopian & somber without it. (C) Even suits a full yellow door.
I am a firm believer of yellow panels both for the safety side of things but also the actual aesthetics of the trains. That Brum livery would look so much better with yellow panels the same goes for those TfW liveries, so much better with the yellow panels.
Some trains non yellow works well. Hull Trains 802 and TPE 802s and 397s. Others like the two above are just ugly anyway.
