I remember an extended stop at the Las Vegas station the first time I rode the Zephyr. They told passengers they were welcome to go to the nearby casino, but warned that there are no clocks or windows, and they do not announce when the train is leaving. "Next train will come through this time tomorrow."

For one stop in Albuquerque on the Chief, someone in my train car knew the area and pointed us to a very good ice cream shop a couple of blocks away called Coldstone. So I got to try them years before they opened up in Chicago.

Amtrak hasn't gone to Vegas since the 90's. Neither does the Zephyr, think you confused it with Reno.

Re long-distance trains running diesels on the NEC: back around the late 90s, the Palm and Star kept its diesels until Philadelphia. (Back then, Amtrak pretended to be a freight railroad.) They ran road railers and wanted to swap locomotives and remove the road railers at the same stop. (They likely would have kept diesels all the way to NYP but for the ban on diesels in the tunnel.) The Meteor, which had no road railers, took on an AEM-7 at Washington.

Auto Train and the two Florida trains (Meteor and Star) refuel and take potable water in Jacksonville and have an operating crew change (engineers and conductors) there as well. AFAIK the Meteor also has a fuel/water stop and operating crew change in Florence while the Star does that in Southern Pines.

Yeah, it was the Desert Wind that went to Vegas. It split from the Zephyr at Salt Lake City.

Nope, but this would have been late '80s or very early '90s. At the time it split into two trains in Salt Lake City, with one going to Oakland and the other to Los Angeles (my destination). I was very bummed when the L.A. leg was eliminated; it was a much longer ride than the Chief, but the scenery is staggering.

Must of been the Desert Wind then, that's the only Amtrak train that would of went to Las Vegas at that time, which combined with the California Zephyr at SLC for the run to or from Chicago.

That could well be. This would be around 30-35 years ago, so my memory gets a bit foggy on those kinds of details. Just sucks that what was once two easy options for an A to B trip is now a more expensive triangle (including Coast Starlight from L.A. to Emeryville) plus a hotel room stay.

That's directly related to the Achievement discussion - which we covered in both the written Roadmap and the live stream.

I went there on 94, and on the downtown at the back of the "Plaza" Casino Hotel you have the tracks, separated by just a fence.
I looked trains there, and it arrived an Amtrak train, with an almost brand new P42!
It looked amazing for such time!

I went back on 2014, but someone advise me that was not a secure place to be!
So I went 2 blocks away beside a railway crossing!

Thank you for replying. I’ve just had another read through of the article but can’t see this covered (hence why I asked). The only reference to SOS achievements that I can see is the line
    • Achievements not unlocking (DB BR 187, Nahverkehr Dresden, Oakville Subdivision, Spirit of Steam, Horseshoe Curve) – currently investigating
But the problem isn’t the achievement not unlocking, it’s not being able to complete the achievement in the first place due to a missing collectable.

Yes, sorry - could have perhaps been clearer. That's exactly what we mean related to SoS.
