Tried to start DX12 Experimental Version. A small graphic stating DX12 Experimental Version was loading which disappeared and then Steam screen when back to the start Train Simulator Classic and therefore went back to running 64 bit version of Train simulator classic. So therefore cannot comment on the Experimental Version because it will not run.

DX12 version is not launching on Steam Deck (but I haven't restarted it for more than a week, only put in the sleep, so I'll try again after a full restart some time later). After the splash screen Train Simulator Classic shows as running for some half of minute and then a crash report appears in TempDump/Logs (but no zip file I can find there). Anyway, since it's simply a translation from DX9 to DX12 which would then be again translated to Vulcan by vkd3d-proton, then the direct Proton's translation from DX9 directly to Vulcan by built-in dxvk should be sufficient.

Here's what is in the log:
    Code:
Start collecting information about the crash...
    [taking_screenshot]
    Desktop screenshot generation disabled; skipping.
    Creating crash dump file...

Well the big week is over.

So DTG could we have some news from you?
You have enough feedback I think!
What are you planning to do?
    When ?

One more thing, the next update you could do it on Tuesday because doing it on Friday and leaving us to fend for ourselves for 5 days without any news from you I find that a bit of a limit as an attitude.

What is it with people acting so entitled recently? :) The update was launched Saturday... Monday was a public holiday here in the UK. There's been one working day since launch LOL. Considering that they have already spent the whole weekend updating the forums and working hard to solve issues, and that this very thread was created by DTG, I'm fairly certain they will let you know as soon as there is something further to know.

You do know it was a bank holiday weekend here in the UK right?

Yes the release timing sucked because of this but still...

Learn some patience, the update hasn't cost you anything, the game is still more than playable and you could even roll back to a pre update build if you had the sense to make a backup, If not well then that's your fault not DTG's, we all had enough warning the update was coming,.

Not backing up before a major core update... Well that's just dumb.

Even so.. even if Monday wasn't a holiday here, there would have only been 2 working days since launch.

I'm sorry, but not backing up your computer is inviting problems, and not just with Train Sim either. It baffles me that people don't back up their data. Hardware fails. Drives fail. A faulty power supply can kill an entire system. You can, if careless, accidentally delete files. Windows or Mac OS updates can cause issues with installed software. Your computer could be stolen. The list of reasons to back up, if I could be bothered to make such a list, would be massive. The list of reasons for not backing up is significantly shorter. In fact, I will type that list now:

    Reasons for not backing up:
    None.

    That's it.

When a software developer has been warning you for weeks that a new update is coming, and not only that, but actually telling you it may break things... then you back up. Not doing is "crazy".

My PC does not break down, it is new!!
I have never had any failure for over 20 years, I have been building PCs for over 20 years and I know very well what I am doing.

I have more than 50 games do you really think that I will save all my games and other emulators?!!
I would need for that 2 to 3 ssd of 4 to

I would add that according to your reson, console players should also save all their TSW content!!

    I'm speechless.
This is like saying "My car is new, it will never break down, and I will never crash it".
Are you actually saying that you feel you have no need to back up your data? Not just talking about Train Simulator here, but generally?

Are those games ancient DX9 games that are bolted together with thousands of third party and community created content, all thrown together without talking to one another? Train Sim is a house of cards... and it's not DTG's fault it has evolved that way. If you do nothing but buy "official" content off Steam, then you may not appreciate this, but for everyone else, you can't treat the sim like "other games" just as you can't treat long running flight sims like that either. There's so much third party content, DTG can't possibly be responsible for all of it working with every update they release.

Back up your Railworks folder in future.
[edit] This is not even the thread to make these points in either, as this thread is about the experimental DX12 update.

If you want to discuss the merits, or not, of needing to back up, make a thread about it instead of derailing this one, which has nothing to do with what you are talking about.

Running DX12 Experimental is fine for me. Some loss of FPS by ~ 10% maybe. Does it look better - perhaps or am I imagining it?

I've had the same. I was hoping these updates would perhaps improve frame rates, but Portsmouth Direct still runs badly no matter which version I launch, although it does have to be said that the DX12 versions are running worse.

Is this something which works on Windows? I found this but suggests it's a Linux thing:

    https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk

If it's something I can use to make the sim run better I'd be interested to check it out.

It does work with Windows, just drop the d3d9.dll (and only the d3d9.dll) into your Railworks folder, it will not run with the DX12 experimental .exe though so only launch the DX9 64bit version

Personally I'm getting similar frames on DX9 as I did before the update, and roughly 5+ less frames on DX12 and no additional frames using DXVK

    Hello!
Yes, I should have backed up before TSC was updated. I simply missed Steam news, the reason being that I have TS apps on the desktop. Rarely opens Steam to launch simulator.
So my routes Trollhattan Sweden and Bergensbanen Norway I have worked for 12 years stopped working. Hope for new update of TSC.

I tried the same Arizona Divide scenario twice once on DX12 64 and the other on standard 64. On DX12 I was getting 22 FPS and on standard 64 I was getting 34 FPS. On DX12 the ground close up looked as if it was sort of vibrating like a fast stutter. My machine is an Intel i5 10600K CPU with 16 GB of DDR4 ram, AN Asus ROG RTX 3050 8GB OC Gaming GPU running Windows 11 although DTG doesn't support it as their specs say on Steam.

Your routes have stopped working? In which way - in DX12 experimental? or in 64bit DX9? I know certain locos have issues atm. But a route?

Before the TSC update, the Trollhattan route worked with 32- and 64-bit.
The Bergensbanen only worked with 32 bits.
After the TSC update, Trollhattan works with only 32 bit.
The Bergensbanen does not work at all.

Again, what do you mean with "work"? Does it crash on loading the route? Is there display errors? Signalling issues?

Where can I download this? A quick search gave me a lot of outdated links.

I assume that the Raildriver not working is a TSC issue but I have emailed the Raildriver people (PI Engineering) to check that it is not actually a DX12 issue. I'll report back if/when I get a response.

I heard back from PI Engineering and they have confirmed that they believe the issue is with TSC not them as Raildriver is happy with the 64 bit version but not the 64/DX12 beta. Lets hope it gets fixed eventually but I guess Raildriver users are a very small percentage of the TSC userbase and there are bigger issues to fix first.

Then when the routes are uploaded it hangs and I am forced to restart the computer.
    You have P.M.

What is this supposed to do that the d3d9.dll already on your PC doesn't? Nothing, I very much suspect.

It is supplied from that link so that you can run DXT9 software on a Linux machine when running a Windows emulator because Linux doesn't have that file by default.

I'm not sure how it works but it gives me higher FPS when playing TSC.

Fair enough, but that would imply that it might not be the most recent version of the file (my PC has three updates this year alone) so there is a risk it may not include the latest features and/or bug-fixes. The current ones I have (32-bit and 64-bit) are both dated 12th April 2023.

Anyway, please don't think I am forcing my opinions on you. I was just intrigued. As they say, if it floats your boat . . .

If you want to read a bit more, DXVK can be downloaded from github. The readme there contains a bit more information.

This thread (thanks wellington) explains how cActUsjUiCe discovered out how to get better with certain settings in Simulator and try to get better FPS with Vulkan.

I have used dx12 and the general 64 bit update and after changing about 7 .png thumbnails all works fine. No change in frame rate but it seems more stable. I had to remove some just trains content and reinstall and they now work ok. Some of the Armstrong powerhouse content needs removing and reinstalling but overall it seems ok. The update file sizes seemed to be very small so I’m not sure what has changed (I’m not IT engineering experienced in any way!)

Did the update remove non essentials files?

Overall I love TSC, I have learnt to do a lot of things especially with TsTools, created quick drives and scenarios.

The one issue I have is that I can’t make custom stock as it crashes with OOM at around 27%. It’s not the end of the world though as TsTools does the job.

It improves a little with Vulkan, the problem is that this game is still old, it is the same thing as when it was released in 2009, for this game to be spectacular it would have to be completely rewritten again for native DX12 and not D3D9on12.

Interesting. I wonder why I’m not seeing any more than 12 fps in DX12? Curious.

I had to tell my control panel to use my dedicated GPU as it was defaulting to my intergrated, although when I did that the DX12 doesn't load.
Guessing this is because the DX12 uses a different .exe

You cannot use DX12 and Vulkan together, the presence of the D3d9.dll in the Railworks folder will cause TSC to crash at startup if you select DX12.

You are running the 64bit DX9 version I guarantee it.

See my prior post for reference, do you have a D3d9.dll in your Railworks folder? If so rename the file extension or remove it completely.

DX12 produces an odd glint/reflection with a hard demarcation on the flat windows of locos. Here's an example. The position varies as you move the camera. This isn't present in the standard 64 bit exe, where the 'glint' is realistic.

Even though I have selected it in the properties for TS? TS is running approximately twenty FPS slower than in DX9 64 bit.

Perhaps running it in DX12 disables RW Enhancer?

Hmm, maybe, it does launch with a completely separate .exe, Perhaps RWE2 doesn't place the D3d9.dll in the Railworks folder then, I know using DXVK does..

I will have to test it later once I've led Dr Gordan Freeman out of the Black Mesa Incident.
