Third set of images visually documenting a recent early-daylight stopping-passenger-service QD from Edinburgh to Newcastle on East Coast Mainline, courtesy of Just Trains - Newcastle to Edinburgh route. Motive power is provided by a CW LNER A5, seen in a latter-day weathered BR livery. At Berwick Upon Tweed. I almost added this capture to my TSC Win10 Desktop Background folder: I did add this capture to the folder: Departing Berwick Upon Tweed Station. This too was added: Final Berwick Upon Tweed capture: I knew from the get go that the LNER A5, both a tank loco and a water guzzler, stood a snowball's chance in h*ll of completing this rather long run, with no watering facility en route. Sure enough, tank-water hit circa 29gl not long after the above image was captured. I kept going until boiler-water dropped uncomfortably low, then pressed escape, bringing the run to an unceremonious end. It was fun while it lasted.
Part 2 of 2 DB Class 66 '66137' continues it's journey to Watford with service 6Z57 and hauling 15 HKA and JMA wagons filled with sand(?) seen here departing from the sidings outside of Marks Tey to wait for trains to pass and then continuing until Stratford where another driver will take over for the journey on the North London Line during the Autumn of 2014. Locos: British Rail Class 66 Route: Great Eastern Main Line London-Ipswich
Let's try this again! SNCF Class 186 '186 260-6' leads an intermodal freight train beginning at Strasbourg Port-du-Rhin in France and first heading south to Strasbourg-Neudorf to shunt around the container wagons and couple up to the other end in preperation to head north into Germany. This was a movement usually not necessary but had to happen due to the shunter at Strasbourg Port-du-Rhin breaking down. After this, the train will then travel to Karlsruhe Gbf where another driver will take over for the rest of the journey to Frankfurt as the sun begins to set during the Autumn of 2010. Loco: NS Class 186 Route: Bahnstrecke Strasbourg - Karlsruhe
During Caledonia Works most recent sale, I snapped up an NER Class R / LNER D20 4-4-0 tendered steam locomotive. CW's manual reveals that, during its LNER days, it performed passenger duties from Edinburgh to Newcastle. Yes, the same route my most recent image series documents, with a different loco /coach combo. Despite the resultant redundancy, I could not resist using Just Trains - Newcastle to Edinburgh for the D20's maiden voyage. We again travel from Edinburgh to Newcastle Central. As to differences between the two runs, two stand out, one minor, one significant. The train is now a semi-express run, stopping at only those few stations that can house its entire complement of coaches. The D20, unlike the A5, has more than ample tank water to complete the run. Edinburgh, circa 0657, on a clear Autumn morning. This is nearly identical to the image that opens my Edinburgh-Newcastle - LNER A5 series. The camera is now positioned to capture a bit more on the right, to keep the moon in frame: Departing Edinburgh station. I find this image "atmospheric" It has been added to my Win10 Desktop Background folder: Away from artificial lighting, we enter a muted landscape: More To Come . . .
British Rail Class 419 '9005' is travelling as a single unit operating a parcels train service from Brighton to London Bridge, the train is seen here doing its run between South Croydon and London Bridge stopping at 8 stations in between during the Autumn of 1986. Locos: British Rail Class 419, British Rail Class 421, British Rail Class 423 Route: South London Network
A run this morning with the fabulous Bossman 'Schools' class locomotive, no. 30916 Whitgift paired with one of the larger Lord Nelson tenders. The 6.35pm London Victoria to Ramsgate & Deal was one of the more important express departures to the Kent Coast and yet produced a medium-sized locomotive such as a Schools or L1, and the usual mix of Maunsell stock with the odd Bulleid vehicle. After a fast run (87mph at Farningham Road), 'Whitgift' is held by signals on the approach to Rochester Bridge while a conflicting move towards Strood takes place. A few minutes later the express makes its first booked stop at Chatham Half an hour (and three stops) later, we see the train at Faversham. The route era and scenic furniture etc may be out of place, but the Schools just feels right on this route and is a joy to drive.
The MC&SA (Moscow, Camden & San Augustine) has put it's Alco RS11s through the paintshop along with its SW1200s.
Second set of images documenting a recent early-daylight semi-Express passenger QD from Edinburgh to Newcastle, on Just Trains - Newcastle to Edinburgh route. The train is headed by an NER Class R / LNER D20 4-4-0 tendered steam locomotive. According to Caledonia Works' manual, the D20 was actually assigned this run during its LNER days. I debated excluding the below image due to its rather bland lighting, but in the end decided that the set needs at least one view showing the train's frontend: A view leaning out of the cab on the Fireman's side: TO BE CONTINUED . . .
Part 1 of 2 Union Pacific GE AC4400CWs '7103', '7257', '7209' and '7282' lead northbound manifest train MWCST with GE ES44AC '7572' in the middle and GE AC4400CW '7135' at the rear of the train. The train originated from West Colton, California and is bound for Stockton, California but will be following late and severely delayed manifest train HBARBAK1 over the Tehachapi Pass due to the delayed train suffering mechanical issues. This train begins from Mojave and heads as far as Rowen before stopping to wait for another train to pass during the Spring of 2021. Loco: GE AC4400CW Route: Tehachapi Pass: Mojave - Bakersfield
Part 2 of 2 Union Pacific GE AC4400CWs '7103', '7257', '7209' and '7282' leading northbound manifest train service MWCST with GE ES44AC '7572' magically shapeshifting into a GE AC4400CW in the middle and GE AC4400CW '7135' at the rear after waiting for southbound manifest train service MPDWC to pass at Rowen continue their journey to Stockton, California but will be going as far as Bakersfield to stop for a layover as the sun begins to set upon arrival there. The train ahead, service HBARBAK1 has gained some distance so it will be an easier journey down the Tehachapi Pass to Bakersfield than the last segment of it's journey on the Tehachapi Pass during the Spring of 2021. Loco: GE AC4400CW Route: Tehachapi Pass: Mojave - Bakersfield
Third set of images documenting a recent early-daylight semi-Express passenger QD from Edinburgh to Newcastle, on Just Trains - Newcastle to Edinburgh route. Santa Fe EMD GP7s '2868', '2791' and '2678' lead an empty coal train from Hoehnes after awaiting a train to pass, then head to the railway yard at Jansen just south of Trinidad on the newly opened 37 mile branch line to serve a large coal mine in York Canyon. Upon reaching Jansen, the train will drop off it's empty coal wagons and couple up to a different set of coal wagons, this time full, and take them into the railway yard at Trinidad as the sun beings to set on the train during a 1966 Winter evening. Loco: EMD GP7 Route: Raton Pass: Trinidad - Raton
Something of a Welsh flavour again. I've always thought that a Jacobite-esque tourist steam train could run from Llandudno in the summer, and Blaenau Ffestiniog would be the ideal destination (with a stop at Betws-y-Coed for those who wish to sample the outdoor activities available there.) One of my favourite locomotives to drive is the BMG S15 Class (which is hugely improved with the SSS soundset) and therefore we see no.828 at Blaenau Ffestiniog having recently arrived with the Conwy Valley Express. The weather is typical for the area! Waiting patiently for its trainload of tourists, Merdynn Emrys simmers at the head of a rake of vintage (and not-so-vintage) Ffestiniog stock. Meanwhile a discussion is ongoing about whether the supplied water tanker will be of sufficient size & quality...
I’m new to taking screenshots, so mine aren’t as good as some posting here. Some of them are really incredible. Anyway given the debacle of the Midland Mainline DLC on TSW, I decided to spend my money completing the set of extensions for JT’s MML on TSC instead and also picked up the Metropolitan Line. There is a crossover scenario where you take an S8 stock train from Barrow Hill to Derby for refurbishment. It was a pretty enjoyable and unusual so I thought I’d try a couple of screenshots. Results below.
Welcome to the club, may your stay be long, happy and fruitful! Didn't I see you around in the TSW screenshot thread? Your name is very familiar. In my view this thread is about sharing our journeys and experiences, hoping it also entertains others. As for quality, aside from applying photographic teachings and finding your style, it helps to intentionally take more shots than you want to keep and share, and just select the best ones. The selection process keeps training you over time. Evaluating what you like in others' pictures does the same.
Spoornet Class 6E1 Series 3 'E1375' leads a tourist passenger train with Class 6E1 Series 4 'E1458' at the rear during the Summer of 2014. We see the train here starting from Frere and visiting many historic war memorials along the way until the Battle of Colenso War Memorial is reached, then 'E1458' is used to take the train back to the nearest station which is Colenso. Locos: South African Class 6E1 Series 1, South African Class 6E1 Series 3, South African Class 6E1 Series 4 Route: KwaZulu-Natal Corridor: Pietermaritzburg-Ladysmith
Santa Fe GE Dash 8-40BWs '565', '579', '535' and '560' lead a manifest train over the Raton Pass with GE Dash 8-40CWs '912', '824' and '854' at the rear. The train departed from Raton and headed to Trinidad where it stopped to drop off the three rear helper units and soon after coupled up to more hopper wagons at the rear before continuing to Hoehnes where the train stopped in a siding to wait for another train to pass. Loco: GE Dash 8-40BW Route: Raton Pass: Trinidad - Raton
Thanks!! I can't help myself to get out of the cab and take a screenshot whenever my train goes around a corner at this point... Results in a lot of deleted screenshots because they aren't as good as the other 5 I usually limit myself to in one session.
Fourth set of images documenting a recent early-daylight semi-Express passenger QD from Edinburgh to Newcastle, on Just Trains - Newcastle to Edinburgh route. The train is headed by an NER Class R / LNER D20 4-4-0 tendered steam locomotive. According to Caledonia Works' manual, the D20 was assigned this run during its LNER days. Berwick Upon Tweed. I took a number of fine captures here during the LNER A5 run. Despite pulling a heavier load, the D20 made appreciably better time, arriving earlier in the morning. As such, lighting was not advantageous for image capture, beyond what is seen below: Daylight has risen high enough for "blotchy" skies to appear. I began getting these after upgrading to APSW2. (I occasionally saw them before, mostly on routes APSW1 didn't cover.) Complicating things, I upgraded while dealing with a major PC issue, so for several months wasn't able to devote time figuring out what I might have done wrong. Further complicating things, I don't experience blotching in-game, only in screenshots!: Once again I forgot to record this station's name: TO BE CONTINUED . . .
Not everything Stateside is multi-lashups, 140 freight cars or double stackers. Short line - en route for the first pick up of the day and ............................................................................"I do like to be beside the seaside..."
Part 1 of 2 NJ Transit Bombardier ALP-46 '4611' leads a 6 coach long passenger service with Bombardier Multi-Level Cab Car '7034' at the rear. The service will head from New York Penn to Dover and is named the Midtown Direct. The train will depart from New York Penn around 10am and will soon be heading onto the Morristown Line to reach Dover. Here we see the train travelling a distance of 22 miles and reaching as far as Summit between 10:30am and 11am after stopping at 8 stations in between during the Summer of 2017. Locos: Bombardier ALP-46, Bombardier Multi-Level Cab Car Route: North Jersey Coast & Morristown Lines
Part 2 of 2 NJ Transit Bombardier ALP-46 '4611' continues it's journey to Dover on the Morristown Line with the Midtown Direct passenger service. Here we see the train travelling between Summit departing from there around 11am and reaching Dover around 11:30am covering a distance of 20 miles with 7 stops at stations in between. After departing from the station stop before Dover at Denville, the train joins the Montclair - Boontoon Line during the Summer of 2017. Definitely nice shots, Blazin! Great to have some posts by someone new and some rare members. My weekly, as usual a range from fresh to historical shots, in the name of variety (perfect round of seasons, too):
I love ambling along with a short train at just under 25 mph with a diesel that's nearly as old as I am (sometimes they are even older than I) and in this case it's Goddraug's route again - Pogwassek Island Railway (set in Maine USA) - here seen on the mainland (just to confuse). The GP9 is a custom repaint by an RWA member for the route, the box cars are in the RWA library. The route has not yet been released. Here we are ambling along with Beer from the Brewery en route via the interchange - we mustn't shake the bottles too much (hence the amble).
Fifth set of images documenting a recent early-daylight semi-Express passenger QD from Edinburgh to Newcastle, on Just Trains - Newcastle to Edinburgh route. The train is headed by an NER Class R / LNER D20 4-4-0 tendered steam locomotive. According to Caledonia Works' manual, the D20 was assigned this run during its LNER days. Our train departs the station seen in set four's final image: Traversing the "boonies", where we shall spend the rest of this image set: I like this image well enough to so show it despite the fence glitch (noticed after the fact): TO BE CONTINUED . . .
With Jack (Goddraug)'s permission I have been "fiddling" again. These shots are of the Mainland end where the Prescott & Cedar Island RR operates to the interchange with the Class 1. I have "borrowed" the livery of the GP9 (3 posts above) to produce a GE 44Tonner and Flatcars which are reserved for the Railferry barge operation at Oak Bay. The pictures show the "debut" of the 44T.
No, it is allowed on the bridge (which is a fixed link) but not allowed on the "slip" which (in theory) adjusts the track level to the ferry according to tides. The reach cars (3) reach from the end of the bridge onto the ferry and as the cars on the ferry are moved (in a sequence to ensure ferry stability) those left behind are moved so that the reach cars can reach them next "bite". The ferry tracks (2) can take approx 220ft car length (2 50ft + 3 40ft or similar combinations) but the scenarios are being written so that first pull takes 2 cars leaving the remainder on that track in the middle of the barge then similar the other track then back to the first etc. Loading is similar in reverse. There are two ferry terminals (not identical) - one at Oak Bay on the mainland and the other at Adams Bay on the island. Adams Bay has a bridge which by jacks alters the height so there the switcher is NOT allowed on the bridge. Both have a semaphore signal to indicate to the switcher that the ferry barge is "locked in" and it is safe to start operations. Unloading and re-loading takes about 50 - 55 minutes for each and no I haven't figured out how to move the barge from one terminal to another
The route is The Pogwassek Island Railway but has not yet been released by the author. A few of we RWA members have been helping Jack out with repaints of engines and rolling stock but it is his route. I'll check on his timeline, the route is more or less done but needs a few scenarios.
Virtual Railroads are marketing "Brockenbahn" by Waggon Werkstatt. For those who do not know Germany Der Brocken in DDR days was a Soviet listening post as Der Brocken is the highest point in Germany North of the Alps. A metre gauge railway ran from Wernigerode up the mountain and it still does now as the HSB mainly steam hauled using massive 2-10-2Ts. The line also runs to other locations in the Harz mountain area but these lines are not in the DLC (but might be in the future?). Here's a couple of shots of a Brocken bound train and a route plan. The train has just left Drei Annen Hohne.
UPDATE: Jack (goddrauG) has submitted his route to the RWA library, it may well be uploaded this weekend. He has asked me to hold my variations until his work has been uploaded so I plan to upload (to the RWA) a week after his is available in the RWA library. In the meantime I am writing scenarios for the ferry terminals. Scenarios written for Jack's route should function on my variation (which will not overwrite his).
Sixth set of images documenting a recent early-daylight semi-Express passenger QD from Edinburgh to Newcastle, on Just Trains - Newcastle to Edinburgh route. The train is headed by an NER Class R / LNER D20 4-4-0 tendered steam locomotive. According to Caledonia Works' manual, the D20 was assigned this run during its LNER days. Nothing special here. The train continues traveling through your typical Edinburgh--Newcastle countryside, terminus inching ever closer: TO BE CONTINUED . . .
Are these Caledonian Railways class 812s Donald and Douglas or not? If Yes throw in a GW 57xx Duck with Autocoach and GWR 14xx Oliver Autocoach/ Toad Brake Vans. If modern leave the Express runs to the HSTs Pip and Emma
The ferry from Pogwassek Island has been unloaded (cars in the Right hand track) and the Alco S2 is returning the reach cars to the terminal. It is then seen leaving the yard for the engine facility to await orders. Route is Pogwassek Island Railway by goddrauG available in the RWA library.
Amtrak P42 No.64 leads the 12:30 Castle Rock to Colorado Springs train, seen south of Larkspur on 26th July 2023:
A 'what if' railtour from the 1990s. If 46100 'Royal Scot' had been liberated from its internment at Bressingham sooner then we might have seen it in action on the WCML when steam railtours weren't glorified diesel-assisted dining charters. With the late afternoon sun warming the hills, the Scot and Black Five no.45407 crest the long hard climb from Beattock to Beattock Summit with 13 bogies on the drawbar. The stock is a mixture of LMS-Stanier support coach & saloon, the SRPS Mark 1 rake and a pair of Intercity Charter-liveried MK1 diners on the rear. Having departed London Kings Cross at 06:50am and run via Leeds and Carlisle, the punters have enjoyed haulage by RES Class 90, LNER / BR Blue A4 no.60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, and now this LMS pairing to take them to Glasgow. About an hour earlier, we see 60007 cooling off in the loco holding sidings behind Carlisle station. A few years earlier, my imaginary self captured some shots between Sheffield and New Mills in the Hope Valley. The DMU set is a hybrid 117/104 unit (it kindof existed in real life as a Newton Heath 116/104 trio) and for simulation purposes the centre car is from the IHH 107 but to my eye it looks the part.
