I noticed the last few weaks a lot of unnessary red signals with freight. Especialy on British routes, Crewe-Preston and Milton-Crewe.

When I arrive at a junction the singal is red, you have to brake to almost a stop and at the last moment the signal turns green. There is no other train the blocking the path at that moment. I turned off signal delays and random behaviors, but that makes no difference.

It's on all junctions, are the more people experienced this?

It’s approach control, which happens on the real life railway, and is there to ensure the train slows sufficiently for the junction. The signal remains at danger until a train has been in the section of track approaching the signal for a set period of time and then releases to allow the train to enter the junction. It works from track circuits in real life.

Does this mean that if you slow down enough you won't encounter a red signal, or do you necessarily have to pass over the AWS beacon to trigger the signal to clear ?

The idea is that you do slow down and be ready to stop (treating it like any other signal at danger) but by slowing early enough the signal should step up while you are a fair distance away (if the route ahead is clear) and you won’t need to stop. There is always the chance that in some routes in TSW, the system is faked and it just steps up when you reach the AWS magnet, rather than simulating the real way it works, but I don’t know if that’s the case. In any case you should never expect the signal to step up as the route ahead may not be clear and you will have to stop. You should always be approaching adverse signals slowly.
