TODv3, TODv3.5, and TODv4 all have their upsides and downsides. (TODv3.5 is the one used on Dresden-Riesa, Dresden-Chemnitz, and Luzern-Sursee)

I will say that I love the volumetric clouds that TODv4 has. The old 2D clouds look horrible.

It's washed out exactly as you describe on my 4K Sony Bravia TV.

Oh, volumetric clouds are great. Love 'em. though I dial volumetrics back in a lot of games on say, my Ayaneo handheld, where the performance hit is not worth it.

Agreed! But for all this to happen there would need to be proper quality assurance testing and... well... we already know how well that has been with this version.

It's the kind of testing and calibration the devs should be doing themselves during development, by using their eyes, before it gets near the QA team. If the programmers and artists can't see something wrong with the washed-out appearance while working on it, I'm concerned.

You can't do that, because every display is different. But for that reason, users need to be given controls so they can tailor the lighting to their individual rigs.

Some people have HDR displays, some have SDR displays, some have displays with heavy black crush, some have displays with heavy backlight bleed, some have a wider colour gamut, some have a narrower one. It's why you can't have a one size fits all approach.

No, you can't see how it will look on every different display. Of course there is variation. And different users with identical displays will have their own preferred colour, brightness, etc., settings.

But a developer can indeed test across at least a couple or several types of display, but more to the point a developer can see when something simply looks way off on a fairly standard monitor. And it seems to me that literally everyone here, on their various displays – monitors and televisions – can see that routes like SEHS do look way off and unnatural in certain light conditions. I thought that fact was already acknowledged by Matt or somebody, so therefore they could no doubt see it during the development stage.

If the argument were that simple and true, then I would have issues with every other or most games made, because the issue must be with my display, but I have never played any other game whatsoever that looks so bland, flat and washed-out as some of these routes. Doesn't matter which of my displays I've plugged these games into, either, they always look good enough without me having to fiddle with settings on my display.
