Is there any great different between these two versions? I have seen some freeware routes stating they will only work with one version or the other.

The AP version requires you to own other routes/locos

Heavily reworked class 37 (requires DTG Settle to Carlisle)
    Route Requirements
    DTG GEML London to Ipswich
    DTG Isle of Wight

The Assets from these routes are included in the Steam version
I think it just uses the OHLE from GEML and I don't know what is used from Isle of Wight

The DTG version has everything you need to run out of the box, but has unrealistic AI and branding removed from rolling stock.

The AP version requires extra rolling stock and route packs to work properly, but has realistic AI with correct liveries.

If you have the extra stuff needed then AP's will give you a more realistic experience. The DTG version is cheaper in a sale that AP's and DRG's sales are more frequent.

The route is very well modelled and has a lovely rural feel as well as having a timeless quality about it. Away from Norwich even steam locos don't look too out of place.
