IMO the best move would to be launch "Train Sim World" - no number - and stick with it.

Make the core free - Training Centre included - so everyone can upgrade and keep their routes for nothing.
Make the bundles TSC-style, in that they will be changing every year.

If they want a subscription model, fine.
TSC's okay because it allows people who are new to the game to start their TSC journey - it's a daunting catalogue to look at initially - and TSW will be a big one too.

I thought that the seperated-core would have left us there - it's a model that works for everyone, imo.

I initially thought this is what they were going to do when Train Simulator became Train Sim Classic but we got TSW4 and then recently, TS Classic became TS Classic 2024... Just having the games named Train Sim World & Train Sim Classic looks a lot tidier than the approach they're doing now.

 

Or the odd gem for TSC which is currently my No.1 played game at present.

They can just reuse their current licenses.

No they can’t just reuse current licenses. Those licenses may have a contract tied to them to only be used for the purpose they currently are. Just because they have a license does not mean they can do what they want with it when it suits. They may need to apply for a new license even though they already have one for a company they may need to apply for another one for something else with the same company.

 

That doesnt make it a filler route? You just dont like it which is fine, dont know how adding the north london line would have helped. you would just have 2 seperate A to B "bus service" routes that overlap at one point

 

As there's nothing new on the TSW front, I might give CTS: Tram a whirl next week just to have something different, though I have lots of other stuff to play including TSC.

I find myself drifting away from TSW and I'm not seeing anything on the horizon that will bring me or my Steam wallet back. Without steam, diesel or freight, the game seems to have hit the proverbial wall.

If the game is going the subscription route it might as well go free to play anyway, that way everyone is happy. Such a simple solution

Seems like the ideal thing for customers, one big problem that switch just cost DTG selling customers the next iteration every year and the other benefits to DTG that comes with.

is that worth it to DTG, me thinks not, they’re a business, costing them sales opportunities for no gain to themselves isn’t going to be the way they go for.

 

in my honest opinion, yes, look at 4-6 months section of roadmap, there we have "san bernardino line" a "german route" and a "uk route" and the three routes made directly by dtg, sounds familiar huh? yes, the three routes standard package for a new tsw iteration

 

they wouldn’t announce those yet, those routes will not the the 3 route bundle.

 

but for me at least it seems obvious, the lack of new content, the fact that we are 2 or 3 months away from the likely announcement of tsw5 and that it was precisely in the june roadmap that this "german route" was added to complete the bundle of 3 routes, or else this is all just a big coincidence

 

i agree the next iteration is on the way, but I don’t agree the 3 routes already announced is its bundle.

It would be out of the usual and therefore they will likely release before or move over, unless this year is a rush hour style bundle, that may count as an annual release of the game, but I doubt it is.

 

They've never announced the routes that will come with the next game, until the new game itself is announced.

A lot probably. I can guarantee there'll be TSW6 threads from the moment Easter comes along.

There will be a 5, 6, 7 and so on until TSW is no more and a new train sim is born. No criticism though, but it’s the way DTG have always operated, the only difference is it’s no longer delineated by the year in which it’s released. Focus also basically said the annual release cycle of their products was one of the reasons they acquired DTG in the first place.

It’s probably best to just accept it and move on. Going round in ‘will they, won’t they’ circles is a bit pointless and it sure as hell won’t change the inevitable.

 

One of the main issues already touched on, is it is new version I am not downloading over 200Gb of existing content because DTG CBA to write an install routine that copies over from the existing TSW4 install and just unwraps the pak file to patch and update as necessary.

 

Yes, if they keep expecting us to reinstall the game every year then the download size is just going to keep growing. I can't remember exactly how long it took for TSW4 but I think it was several hours. I wonder how much of a problem it causes for Steam, if lots of players suddenly start downloading a large game. I think there were some problems with DLC entitlements not getting copied across from TSW3 correctly.

finally someone who makes a post about these speculations that hits the nail on the head. If the release a TSW 5 and so on who cares. You are not forced to buy it stick with what you have. It’s the same every year. People complain and all say “I won’t buy it” and a few weeks later they own it because we all enjoy the sim and the hobby.

you don’t need to download it all in one go untick the bits you want to leave it for another day and just download what you want at the time.

 

Logically, each new part comes out a month later. Therefore, the 5th part will appear ... may appear in October 2024

 

My opinion this no tsw5 some kind of summer of late summer pack of 3 routes with new exciting stuff in them idk what but will be sold that way and then for 2025 tsw 2025 instead of tsw 5 tbh know u get to a point were I wish dtg would just say rather than every year the quiteness most people like a suprise but it's obvious be nice if new route was a suprise came from no were that would be cool

 

I wouldn’t count myself among that for the kinda surprise we are talking about, I’ve always found these kinda suprises pointless either way your going to be told the same, being told earlier isn’t a downside it’s usually an upside, surprises are just the same info yet they make you wait, and talk like the wait is a gift…

though in honesty I think games companies use this term surprise as another more customer friendly way at naming usual company policies of not revealing info too early rather than any attempt at pulling off a surprise.

 

Anyone remember that they used to talk a lot on how they were concerned for how people need to download updates and that they didn’t want to keep pushing out updates due to that, now they’ve got one of the biggest size games (with the dlc) releasing and needs reinstalling what looks like every year.

 

you dont need to do a full reinstall straight away you can pick and choose which dlc you want to install and can do it over time.

 

It's especially annoying when you only own certain add ons for layers. Which, given I have many, is a real pain. Means you can't really pick and choose what to install, unless you want to wonder why the layer isn't there.

 

Exactly, and given there is no list anywhere of what layers exist in the first place and which DLC are required to activate them the only solution is to have everything installed. I’m fortunate enough to have a very fast internet connection but I can imagine that without one this annual faff would be a monumental pain in the arse to be honest.

DTG indeed ought to publish and maintain an interdependency matrix for customers. It’s something for years people have been asking for and mind boggling why they have not yet done so. I suppose lack of time is the inevitable excuse, yet they always seem to have plenty of time to keep taking our money. /sarcasm

 

That’s kinda like saying you can buy it and leave it uninstalled. Very true. It’s not any solution though.

And your own way still at some point suggests full download at some point, which again is the exact same.

 

Exactly what I hope TSW5 will fix. I don't need all these routes installed but I still want all the layers.

 

They've already gone in the right direction by no longer having loco dlcs tied to routes thankfully (as long as they released after TSW2), but for base trains with a route its still a problem which they need to be looking at.

 

The last paragraph will sadly not come to fruition with DTG having seemingly abandoned steam support.

 

If there is an tsw5 at lease my iow 483 and the tube stock will work again. Well free roam that is.
