The West Somerset Railway is Britain’s longest standard gauge heritage railway, running for twenty miles between Bishops Lydeard, which is four miles from Taunton, and Minehead.

There are ten stations along the route, serving a variety of destinations. Crowcombe Heathfield and Stogumber are popular with walkers exploring the Quantock Hills whilst Watchet station, the original terminus of the line in 1862, is in the heart of the ancient harbour town. Washford is close to Cleeve Abbey and Torre Cider Farm whilst Dunster station is twenty minutes gentle walk from the medieval village with its Castle. The terminus at Minehead is across the road from the beach and at one end of the town centre.

Steam trains run daily from early April to early October and selected dates throughout the rest of the year. Special events take place regularly together with themed trains such as Murder Mysteries and Fish and Chip Specials. A major Real Ale Festival takes place at Minehead Station in September
