Rather than reply in a thread on screenshots, thought I’d continue this discussion here (regarding the AP Class 40).

I’ve not tried the 40 in 32 bit yet, will try later and see if there’s any difference to my ears. Just personally, I’ve not heard anything glaring when playing 64 bit.

I don’t know how it all works, or have looked at the folders, but would have thought all sounds are just from looped files? You have a train starting up sound, but once it’s running, there’s not going to be a file of 1 hour of stable running, no acceleration or deceleration. You’d think there’s maybe be a few minutes looped?

Or is a base sound somehow ‘sampled’ in the 64 bit version?

How does it all work? Why would 32 or 64 bit make a difference?

It sounds fine in 32bit. There's even a warning on the AP website about it

The sounds are quite short and are looped as required.

I must compare the sounds of the AP Class 40 with the Steam version of D345/40145

Assuming you go from idle to 40% throttle for example, what happens is that it plays the sound of the initial run up to 40%, and then loops a sound file AT 40%. In 64 bit, it loops the whole process.. so you'll here the engine rev up... then work at 40%, then go back to the start and throttle up all over again.

Which is strange as there is only one set of Audio files - not one each for 32 bit and 64 bit

I've noticed this, the whistle chimes in over and over at the wrong times - I wonder if this will be corrected one day? Fingers crossed, as the 40 pack is generally quite excellent.

Wow this issue has not been that obvious to me, I did see the disclaimer on the AP site when purchasing but have not noticed anything blatantly untoward in 64 bit. I will now have to run it in both 32 & 64 bit and see how they differ.

Here's the 64bit looping in action.

Just awful. I can't stand to use it if I'm honest, and running in 32bit is a pain sometimes with larger routes and scenarios. Many of the scenarios in South Lancs and North Cheshire in BR Blue, and Liverpool to Manchester Victoria (my two favourites routes for a 40) just crash in 32bit.

Without doubt, the 40 is the worst product AP do.

Have just run the 40 in 32 & 64 bit.
OMG you are spot on, I hadn't really noticed till you pointed it out, (I will never win prizes for attention to detail).
How bizzare, wonder why it is only this Loco that suffers with this problem? I have most of AP's offerings & they are all just fantastic in my eyes / ears.

It is not so obvious when in cab view but really stands out in external view when you listen for it.
Like I said my attention to detail of sound was somewhat missing up to this point.
Funnily the Steam 40145 doesn't suffer the same problem, must use different sound files.

    It's also WAY too quiet.

I do agree with that, I think it is an AP thing, I just crank the speakers up to 11. LOL

Yeah, true, shame really though - wonder why on earth it's just been left like that?

Yeah, I’ve only run it in 64, and have never known anything else.

I noticed that on a cold start, the initial fumes aren’t synchronised with the engine start, as with the 37, maybe that’ll work better in 32bit too.

Watching that on my little phone screen, I didn’t realise at first that was a real 40!

I don't find the Class 40 quiet except in the Cab
So I drop the cab windows to increase the cab sound

"Sounds (looped or not)", and there was I assuming it was a 2 & 1/2 hr audio file for a 2 &1/2 hr route. Kappa.

LOL. Yeah, it was the Staycation Express that ran from Appleby to Skipton along the Settle to Carlisle line last summer. Standing next to a 40 in BR blue livery really took me back. It was great.

For something to do I did a quick drive with the AP Class 40 and you get that looping sound
Did another run with the 40145 off Steam which is also done by AP/RailRight and no looping sound

The Class 40 Engine.proxyxml and Class 40 Engine.proxybin files are newer in my version of the normal Class 40 compared with those in the 40145 folder so having renamed the Class 40 Engine.proxyxml and Class 40 Engine.proxybin files by adding .bak to their names I copied the files from the 40145 to the default folders and the looping has gone :)

Interesting Peter, thanks for sharing, will give it a try. How do the 40145 sounds compare to the AP 40 souns generally? Quality, loudness?

The AP 40 sounds are rather quiet - is there a way to book a loco's sounds by adjusting files?

Sorry no idea on changing the sound volume

The 40145 uses the same sound files as the the AP stand alone version so sounds the same to me
It is the Class 40 Engine.proxyxml and Class 40 Engine.proxybin files that define which sound is played, how loud and if it is looped or not

My steam version of the 40 also loops, so no point me trying this.

Out of curiosity what is the date of your Class 40 Engine.proxyxml file in railworks\Assets\RailRight\Class40Mainline\Audio\RailVehicles?

If yours are different... and don't loop... upload them to dropbox or Google drive.. share the wealth :)

My files in that folder have the same date so they won't be different than yours
The files in railworks\Assets\RailRight\Class40BRBlue\Audio\RailVehicles are newer from 2018

All I did was copy the files from the Mainline to the Blue/Green folders and it, to me, seemed to make a difference.
    No harm in trying it
Do you have that EFX on as I don't

I do have it on, as without it on the class 91 sounds utterly horrible, as do a couple of other AP products... see this thread... https://forums.dovetailgames.com/threads/class-91-motor-noise.26835/

40145 still isn't fixed though. I've spoken to AP about it and they've said that they have tried to get into contact with DTG about the fix and have had no response.

No idea. It's only a sound file, not he whole product, and would have been useless to me without owning the AP class 40. Besides, it's irrelevant now.
