Hi all, this time I'm suggesting something slightly out of my comfort zone, but popularly requested: The Berlin S-bahn. I chose the S9 and S3 lines to be the center of this, as they cut straight through Berlin, offering views on famous locations, pictures of which will be at the end of this post.

    The Route

    General description

The route is made up of the S9 and S3 lines. They run together from Spandau to Warschauer Straße, where they split. S3 diverges towards Erkner, via Ostkreuz. S9 curves south just before Ostkreuz, and continues to the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). The line contains some well known parts of Berlin, such as the Museuminsel, the still shiny Berlin Hbf, the Janowitzbrücke, and in the distance even the Bundestag, Fernsehturm and Rotes Rathaus. On this route the S-bahn largely runs besides classic railway tracks, on which the RB14 and RE7 run, both of which are operated by Talent 2 EMUs. That is why I chose this route, because it appeals to players that like RE and RB services (like me) too!

    Services
Below I've listed the important services on this route. The stops that are on this route proposal are bold. In italic I've listed the last and first stops not on the route, so you know where the line diverges. For S-bahn services I have not listed frequency, as it is Every 10 min. on all lines (every 30 min. during weekends and night). S3 and S9 are listed because they are the important ones that are included entirely. There are more S-bahn services that run partially along the route, but if I were to list them all I'd be busy all day.

    S3
    Spandau – Stresow – Pichelsberg – Olympiastadion – Heerstraße – Messe Süd – Westkreuz – Charlottenburg – Savignyplatz – Zoologischer Garten – Tiergarten – Bellevue – Hauptbahnhof – Friedrichstraße – Hackescher Markt – Alexanderplatz – Jannowitzbrücke – Ostbahnhof – Warschauer Straße – Ostkreuz – Rummelsburg – Betriebsbahnhof Rummelsburg – Karlshorst – Wuhlheide – Köpenick – Hirschgarten – Friedrichshagen – Rahnsdorf – Wilhelmshagen – Erkner

    S9
    Spandau – Stresow – Pichelsberg – Olympiastadion – Heerstraße – Messe Süd – Westkreuz – Charlottenburg – Savignyplatz – Zoologischer Garten – Tiergarten – Bellevue – Hauptbahnhof – Friedrichstraße – Hackescher Markt – Alexanderplatz – Jannowitzbrücke – Ostbahnhof – Warschauer Straße – Treptower Park – Plänterwald – Baumschulenweg – Schöneweide – Johannisthal – Adlershof – Altglienicke – Grünbergallee – Flughafen BER Terminal 5 (Schönefeld) – Waßmannsdorf – Flughafen BER Terminal 1-2
Rolling Stock: BR 480, BR 481

    What comes with the route?

    BR 483/484
    [IMG]
The BR 483/484 is the newest addition to Berlins S-bahn fleet. It can be seen increasingly on S3 and S9. They have been in revenue service since january 1st 2021. They were built by Siemens and Stadler. The 483 is a so called 'quarter train' or 'Viertelzug' in German, consiting of two carriages with cabs on each end. The 484 consits of 4 carriages, it's called a 'half train' or 'Halbzug' in German, it too has cabs at each end. As you can tell from the names, a normal S-bahn train consits of 8 carriages. More info on wikipedia.

    BR 481/482
    [IMG]

The 481 is the second newest train on the Berlin S-bahn. It can be seen throughout Berlin. They came into being after the German reunification, and the reunification of the S-bahn systems that came paired with that. Unlike the BR 483/484 and BR 480, it only has a full driving cab at one end, meaning the minimum length is 2 coupled sets (with outward facing cabs), and thus 4 carriages. More info on Wikipedia

    BR 442 Talent 2
    [IMG]

The 442 is already in game, so I'd normally put it under 'layers', but as everyone that owns TSW2 has SKA, and therefore the Talent 2, it makes no difference whether it comes with the route or as a layer. It operates the RE and RB lines on the route, which would give a bit of variation from the S-bahn services, giving faster services that stop less. More info on Wikipedia

    DLC
    BR 480
    [IMG]
The BR 480 came in to life due to the need for new rolling stock when BVG took over S-bahn services in West-Berlin from the DR in the '80s. It doesn't run this route a lot anymore, but would be good to see for variety. More info on Wikipedia

    FEX?

The line doesn't have much room for DLC, but the FEX would be possible. It consists of a few DoStos hauled by a TRAXX 3 (BR 147) locomotive. But this train would only be able to run from Ostkreuz to BER airport on this route, which is a bit short. Adding an extension to Berlin Gesundbrunnen and the lower levels of Berlin Hbf would be a possibility, but DTG has not yet shown interest in making extensions of the kind. Another option would be merging this route with a future Ringbahn route (I have made a suggestion for a way to connect routes). This would allow more room for the FEX and more S-bahn services.

    Layers
Just as the line has little room for DLC, it has little room for DLC. Of course a lot of trains travel the route, but they only do so for a short distance, and then diverge. This does mean there is a lot of oppertunity for AI layers, to make the route feel prototypically alive.

    Conclusion
The S9 and S3 lines of the Berlin S-bahn would make good additions to the game, they'd offer new 3rd rail commuter services, a first for Germany. Besides that the RE7 and RB14 lines would offer more then just S-bahn services to the route. Please let me know your thoughts below. Also please let me know if you have additional information or if I made a mistake, as stated at the beginning, this is a bit out of my comfort zone as I'm not familiar with the Berlin S-bahn.

    Edits:
13-3-2021: Changed which units come as standard with the route, the BR 483/484 now comes as standard instead of the BR 480, which is an optional DLC.

I would love to see this route in the game. I, myself actually just recently made a suggestion on these two exact lines. I think this would be great, especially if the Regional Lines are included as well.

Excellent suggestion, I'd like to note that as of recently the DB BR483/484 are in service on the Stadtbahn aswell so they could be a potential DLC or included as modern stock with the route!

Perhaps they could replace the 480 as the one that comes standard with the route, as the 480 isn't seen very often on this route as far as I know. I'll think about changing that. Thanks for the info!

Speaking of the signaling system here does it use the same Sifa PZB LZB as SKA HRR Rapid Transit Leipzig area RSN RSO and Main Spessart Bahn or not? If they do players will be familiar to those. If not then a Tutorial will be needed for the signaling system Berlin S-Bahn.

The Berlin S-bahn does not use PZB or LZB, it uses ZBS. There will be a tutorial needed for this. The signals are the same KS-signals we're used to from SKA, though I believe some HL-signals might still be in use.

The normal network for the RB/RE services uses PZB, as is usual. Though it might be useful for new players to have a tutorial for this too.

Wasn't the lack of ZBS the reason the 480 isn't allowed on the stadtbahn anymore?

Thank you for telling me about the safety system for Berlin S-Bahn. Looks like they drive differently than BR 442 & 1442 Talent 2 & 430 from HRR due to the ZBS

A cool suggestion! I don't know the length, but it would probably benefit from adding a little stretch to Königs Wusterhausen. This wouldn't add whole S-Bahn lines (parts of S46 and S8), but it would help a lot with RE traffic creating quite a bit chunk for the RE-2 line (which used to run with 182s a couple of years ago, now it's a private operator with Stadler Kiss - a possible DLC content). It's a nice 50-minute run end-to-end.

That could be a good addition, both from the start, or as later extension with the Stadler KISS if DTG wants to start doing loco + extension packs.

As far as I know, DTG does look on the suggestions forums a lot. They know there is a demand for the Berlin S-bahn (and Dutch routes, which I want to see the most). I've tried to offer a possibility for a route, this one being a good option in my opinion because it also has RE and RB services, operated by a loco already in game, and thus appealing to a broader audience for similar moddeling costs. Other players have suggested the ringbahn and other routes, which would also be fun.

DTG does know about the desire, and I don't doubt that a Berlin S-bahn route will come eventually. I'm curious to see which, but I am of course rooting for this one. We might see it (amd Dutch routes) on the the roadmap tomorrow, but we'll know that when we do.

I finally added a map specifically for this suggestion. It was quite a bit of work, and different from the maps I usually make, but I hope it helps to give a clear image of what the route I'm suggesting is like.

Yes, not at this time. They might be in the future, as soon as DTG gets around to making this route, but for now they would not be realistic on S9 and S3.

I like this suggestion, the Berlin S-Bahn would be quite the good network to have - even in part.

I think this - along with Köln - Wuppertal would be great routes.
(P.S. jolojonasgames I was looking at the rivet forums and I noticed an exact copy of that suggestion by the user of this forum known as drnicktgm#1259 with no credit, I assume (unless something else has been said) this is a steal, just incase you don't know)

But I absolutely would buy this if it were made.

I can't recall him asking me, but I very well might have forgot. I would appreciate credit and a heads up when such things are being done, but in the end I don't really care that much.

I also think that the Berlin S-bahn could be a great addition, showing iconic landmarks, while providing unique gameplay and rolling stock.

The Ringbahn Lines drives every 5 minutes.
We need all of the Lines as DLC and expansion all together then as full Network

this is a very nice suggestion and i would rather have all s bahn routes from berlin so the complete s bahn berlin network would be great.

What S Bahn Line is it that runs from Potsdam HBF to BER Terminal 1/2?

No S-Bahn goes directly from Potsdam HBF to airport BER T1-2 but to Potsdam HBF the S7 goes from Ahrensfelde and from Westkreuz the S9 comes from Spandau which goes to the airport BER T1-2.

The BR 483/484 drives at the S47 Spindlersfeld-Hermannstraße.

I'm curious when it comes to the TSW. As a big fan of the Berlin S-Bahn, I would really appreciate the routes
